Trench and Rain Jackets that are good value for money

The trench coat is a stylish raincoat for men and women alike; it is very versatile and can add a bit of class to any outfit if worn properly. The trench coat has a deep military history dating back to the Boer War where Thomas Burberry designed them for British officers.

The most notable material then was Gabardine which is an innovative wool like substance that had the characteristic of repelling water whilst keeping the wearer ventilated. Original Burberry trench coats are still available but are quite pricey. They will set you back at least $1800 but will last for ages.

Trench Coat Fabrics/Materials

Gabardine

The major merit of the wool Gabardine is its ability to repel water and yet stay strong and when intertwined with a silk lining this garment still stays surprisingly lightweight and functional. British soldiers were the first to use trench coats made of 100% gabardine before they found their way to silver screens. The cost of using gabardine as materials for trench coats is really high and as such, they are only available upon request. Mass scale production is not an economically viable option.

Cotton Fabrics and Blends

Cotton is cheaper than wool and more readily available. It is woven with poplin and twill weaves to arrive at a product with blended characteristics. Cotton is not as good as wool in terms of heat retention but can be water resistant if treated properly. Cotton blends with other man-made synthetic fabrics like polyester and Nylon are commonplace with most manufacturers.

Leather Trench Coats

Leather is a heavier material than its cotton or wool counterparts. It is warmer, easier to clean and repels dirt. Thus hard-working city dwellers would fancy it. Black leather trenches tho, still haven’t caught up with men’s fashion trend probably because of its negative image as a henchman’s favorite.

The most commonly used color of trench coats is Khaki but other colors like ivory to tan are available. Today we can find in department stores colors like blue, navy blue and even black colored trench coats.

Major Features in a Trench Coat

Trench coat hardly goes out of style. They have been a staple clothing in men’s wardrobe for decades with little or no marked differences. It’s a solid investment you are assured they hardly go out of style. Here are some of the features you should look out for when purchasing a trench coat;

Double Breasted or Single breasted

A Classic trench coat should be double breasted and depending on the length should have six to ten buttons. If you are purchasing a trench coat for the first time I would recommend you opt for a double-breasted trench over a single-breasted trench coat.

Epaulets (Shoulder Tabs)

As seen on military uniforms, epaulets are used to indicate the rank of the officer. They have however found their way into the style features of a trench coat. This can be used to secure gloves or other small items.

These sleeves are more relaxed and can help provide more room with multiple layers of clothing. Not all trench comes with raglan sleeves. Some are more fitted and appeal more to the fashion savvy gent.

Belt with D-rings

This feature originally helped soldiers in the line of duty carry grenades and suspend fighting weapons such as swords and knives but today the belt with D-rings is more of a style silhouette helping the wearer define the waistline more appropriately.

The Gun Patch/ Storm Flap

The most important function of the gun patch is to help prevent rainwater from flowing down the shoulders slipping into the jackets.

Sleeve Straps

This can be tightened at the sleeves to help keep out the cold or rain.

Wedge Back

Wedge back design can still be found in modern-day trench coats. They helped provide room at the back of the trench for easy movement.
